One of the questions most often asked is, "What's the best-concealed carry a handgun?" Well, if you're with me often and ask me this question, you already know you better pour yourself a cup of coffee and pull up a chair because my answers will be lengthy and may leave you with more questions than you had when you started.
However, to answer this, you need to ask yourself a few questions because as you will see, no handgun is perfect.
Think about how you dress. Is it easy to hide the gun in your normal everyday clothes? You can try it before buying. At a customer-friendly gun shop, you can hold the gun you're considering and maybe even try it on in the holster on your hip to see if it's the right type to carry.
When choosing your handgun, you need to consider whether each option is right for your hand. Does it show naturally? Can your trigger finger reach the trigger easily without breaking the correct grip? Can sights be used unless the gun is pointed and shot? Can you see the grain clearly with your prescription lens?
The first thing to look out for in a handgun is reliability. The second is reliability. The third is… reliability. Your gun should fire every time you pull the trigger. Although the above criteria are important, we must not sacrifice the reliability and effectiveness of the handgun. Remember, if you carry and train with your weapon every day, it should last a long time!
The gun must be effective - it must be able to stop a determined attacker. This will mostly depend on you pulling the trigger. But to a lesser extent how effective it is depends on the ammo the handgun is fired with and its ammo capacity.
Your defensive handgun should be easy and safe to use. Do you have the arm strength to pull the slide of a semi-automatic pistol back to put a bullet into the chamber or empty the gun? Can you press the slide hold/release lever slightly to lock the slide back? Can your thumb reach out and trigger the magazine catch to drop the magazine? If you have a revolver, can you easily reach and operate the cylinder release with your thumb? Under stress, your fine motor skills tend to fly away.
When you're shopping for your first handgun, you might get nervous and lose interest while at the gun store. If this sounds familiar, I promise we've all been there and done it. Know that this is where the value of a truly caring and dedicated professional can shine through, and that will be the gun dealer from whom you buy your handgun.
